Certain actions that you perform on your Mac will cause default apps to open. For example, clicking a document may open Pages. But what if you want Microsoft Word to open instead? You can also set your default web browser and email reader.
Here's how!
Experienced Mac users know that many applications and utilities contain a preference pane component. It means that upon being installed on Apple computer, such apps create associated panes by adding icons to the System Preferences window. MacOS reserves the first few rows of the System Preferences window to place its own settings.
While the likes of Mail, iTunes and Safari are set as the default applications on your Mac - meaning they launch automatically when you open an email, audio file or web link - it's easy to give. In macOS, the System Preferences app located in the Applications folder is where you can adjust various settings to customize your Mac. Most system preference panes are native to macOS and cannot. As usual, go to the Accessibility System Preference pane to see Speech option. Select the “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” checkbox. By default, speaking is enabled when you press Option-Esc. Choose a voice. Apps that block social media on mac. Alex is the default but there are many others. For full screen-reading capability (like JAWS) you can turn on voice over. Many third party apps and utilities automatically add a preference pane to your Mac’s “System Preferences” app. While some of these third party preference panes may be useful, others will be completely unnecessary and do little more than clutter up your System Preferences, making it more difficult to find the preference panes that you do want.
How to change the default Mac app for specific file types
- Right-click on a file that uses the file type you'd like to change the default for. For example, one with a .jpg extension (a photo).
- Click on Get Info in the pop-up.
- Click Open With if the section isn't already expanded.

Now any time you open a file with that extension, the Finder will automatically open it with the app you've selected.
How to set your default web browser
- Launch System Preferences from the dock, Finder, or by clicking the Apple icon in the Menu bar.
- Click General at the top left of the window.
- Click the dropdown next to Default web browser.

How to set your default email reader
Mail is likely the default email app on your Mac, but just in case you have others downloaded, you can set the default reader. Here's how:
- Launch Mail from your dock or the Finder.
- Click Mail in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
- Click Preferences.
- Click the dropdown next to Default Mail Reader.
